"What do we teach our children? . . . We should say to each of them: Do you know what you are? You are a marvel. You are unique . . . You may become a Shakespeare, a Michelangelo, a Beethoven. You have the capacity for anything."
- Pablo Casals
Our COOL Cooperative team is dedicated to helping each of our COOL Creators become their best selves. By providing a safe fun experience with tutors and mentors dedicated to their success and growth and exciting hands-on exploration in film our teens discover their true individuality. Our immersive character driven program builds confidence and promotes personal responsibility, commitment, integrity, and perseverance. These qualities help our young people to make good choices at a time when many of them are dealing with untold pressures in their lives.
By design, our six-year COOL Creators program begins with seventh graders, because they are transitioning between childhood and the new challenges, risks, and responsibilities of young adulthood. This is a time of great physical and mental change – a time of confusion and a search for meaning in life, while striving to find a place in it. For the at-risk seventh grader in particular, this is a potentially dangerous and volatile time. They face significantly more outside pressure to quit school, join gangs, and find less than productive (and oftentimes dangerous) ways to spend their time. By providing great emotional and academic support, and a place for them to be after school, our COOL Creators are less likely to be affected by these negative influences.
Our fun interactive exploration of the career opportunities they can have in film encourages them to discover alternate paths to success that they may not otherwise have. With this new perspective and hope, our young program participants gain a strong foundation to fuel their passions and express new talents, becoming truly unique and special adults.
What can you do to help:
Please make a donation. Give whatever you can because there are many kids who aren't able to participate simply due to our limited resources. Help us provide a scholarship for another young person to join our program.
