"Remember, if you ever need a helping hand, you'll find one at the end of your arm... As you grow older you will discover that you have two hands. One for helping yourself, the other for helping others."
- Audrey Hepburn
Community Service Learning is a cornerstone of the COOL experience. Frequently referred to as "learning by doing," service learning refers to the use of hands-on, community-based projects to supplement traditional curricula. Outside our traditional after-school program COOL participants will be involved in nearly a dozen field trips and other enrichment experiences. Here, our kids are required to participate in service activities that relate to or enrich understanding of the subject matter being covered in the classroom. In addition, our students develop their skills as socially conscious storytellers as they make short films about these experiences. In numerous studies, Community Service Learning has been shown to have a positive effect on personal development, increased self-esteem, self-efficacy, and sense of responsibility.
In addition, it has been shown to help students acquire higher test scores, grade point averages, communication skills, and improved problem solving skills and an increased interest in academics.
